Raksha Bandhan is a religious cum social festival of unconditional love, endless affection, and unbreakable promise of protection shared between the siblings. On this day, sisters tie a thread (known as Rakhi) on the wrist of her brothers that signifies a sister’s eternal love and care towards her brother. As a return, a brother isn’t offering a gift to her, but also an unswerving promise of protection that solidifies the bond of love between them. Raksha Bandhan, a festival of love and rich Indian heritage is celebrated every year, and this year it falls on 10th August 2014. For us, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is a symbol of universal brotherhood and goodwill. According to the Indian mythology, the festival is celebrated since the age of MahaBharat, when Draupadi (the Wife of the Pandavas) tore a part of her sari to stop the bleeding from a war-wounded wrist of her closet aide Krishna. As a debt of her kindness, Lord Krishna swore to defend her from every evil in the world.

Story behind Raksha Bandhan

Another interesting story that states the origin of this festival is that of Yama (the god of death ‘Yamraj’) and his sister, Yamuna (the holy river Yamuna). On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, sister Yamuna blessed her brother Yama with immorality as she tied Rakhi on his wrist. Moved with the blessings, Yama announced that anyone, whom Yamuna ties a Rakhi on this occasion and in return if he promises his protection to her, will be blessed with immortality. This is one of the reasons, why Raksha Bandhan is so popular festival in India. On this day, brothers vow to protect their sisters and sisters pray for her brother’s good health and immortality.
